Job Summary

A Relief Worker provides backfill coverage for Counsellor positions within our various programs. Your main role during your shift will be to support children and youth with therapeutic skills/strategies and assist with service delivery to ensure that individual treatment plans are consistently applied in an atmosphere that is conducive to treatment and based on therapeutically sound principles. The Relief Worker works with teams to coordinate and implement treatment plans as required.

Relief Workers could be scheduled to work, or called in to work on an as needed basis. Staff are expected to be available to cover shifts in above noted programs requiring relief coverage which includes all shifts – days, afternoons/evenings and midnights as well as on-call shifts where applicable. A Relief Worker could be scheduled to work or be called in to work week days or weekends, Monday to Sunday.

Prioritization of shifts to be filled will be Clinical Programs including Day Treatment, Live In Treatment Services and Crisis Services (should training be provided).

Required Training:

  • All mandatory and ministry-required training must be completed prior to taking any shift, including completing shadow shifts in Day Treatment (Primary and Secondary) and Live-In Treatment Services.
  • There may be opportunity to work in Crisis Services and/or Reception subject to expression of interest and available training.
  • First Aid and CPR, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI), and Safe Food Handling are qualifications that are to be maintained during the course of employment.
  • TCI training will be available as part of a conditional offer of employment.

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Will be scheduled as per the Relief Protocol as contemplated by Article 17.04 and as amended from time to time:
  • Must work a minimum of 1 shift every 2 months
  • All Relief Staff shall advise of their availability for relief shifts
  • Qualified, available and interested Relief Staff will be called in order of seniority to offer Relief Shifts that become available with less than 48 hours notice
  • Relief Staff will be notified by email for Relief Shifts that become available with more than 48 hours notice
  • All relief shifts will be for a minimum of three hours.

Qualifications

  • Child and Youth Worker Certificate, Social Services Diploma, or equivalent;
  • 2-3 years experience working with children and youth – preference will be given to those with experience in school-based programs, Live In Treatment Facilities and Crisis Services;
  • Familiarity with offering services via virtual platforms (i.e. email, text, online counselling) would be considered an asset;
  • If direct virtual supports are unfamiliar then an understanding of the various forms of virtual care, as well as an understanding of clinical and privacy responsibilities would be an asset;
  • Knowledge and experience in crisis intervention;
  • Good communication and organizational skills, as well as analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Current Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check within six (6) months;
  • Current certification in First Aid and CPR, TCI, and Safe Food Handling;
  • Valid Driver’s License, able to supply own vehicle and be insurable to drive in Ontario;
  • Meets medical requirements under the CYFSA, Regulations for Licensing of Residences;
  • Bilingual in (French and English) is preferred;
  • Experience working with the Indigenous population is an asset.
